He graduated in Biological Sciences at the University of Parma in 1971.
His academic career developed in the Universities of Chicago (USA), Udine, Lecce, Bologna, Verona and Parma, from Researcher to Associate Professor to Full Professor.
From 1985 to 2017, he held the positions of Department Director, member of the Academic Senate, Pro-rector, Coordinator of the Doctoral School, President of the Graduate and Master’s Degree Courses.
He is coordinator and partner of research projects for the European Commission, NATO, CNR, Ministries, with a focus on environmental biotechnology and the genetics of plants and microorganisms.
300 published papers bear witness to his work.
He was awarded the Milton P. Gordon Award for excellence in a career dedicated to Environmental Biotechnology (International Phytotechnology Society, 2013).
